Yandy Smith Says She Should Have Made 'Hundreds Of Millions' From 'Love & Hip Hop' — Here’s Why She Didn’t

Yandy Smith, co-creator of the hit reality TV franchise "Love & Hip Hop," revealed she missed out on making hundreds of millions of dollars from the series despite its massive success. The show originated from Smith’s idea to focus on rapper Jim Jones and his inner circle’s dynamic, which she believed had authentic appeal on camera. After filming a pilot and sizzle reel, Smith teamed up with producer Mona Scott-Young to combine their concepts, resulting in the launch of "Love & Hip Hop: New York" on VH1 in 2011.

Although Smith was credited as an executive producer, she admits she lacked a deep understanding of the business side of television production. She signed contracts under the guidance of a music attorney unfamiliar with TV deals, causing her to forfeit significant ownership and long-term financial benefits. While the franchise grew to include Atlanta, Hollywood, and Miami spin-offs, Smith was excluded as a producer on these extensions, limiting her earnings despite the show's multi-city expansion and 17-year run.

Reflecting on her experience, Smith acknowledges that she earned millions from the show but believes her true worth should have been in the hundreds of millions given the franchise’s impact and longevity. She stresses the importance of securing knowledgeable legal representation to protect ownership and compensation rights. Smith hopes her story serves as a cautionary tale for aspiring entrepreneurs in entertainment to carefully manage contracts and business arrangements to preserve their creative and financial stakes.

The "Love & Hip Hop" series is now coming to an end after 15 years, with VH1 set to air a six-part special called “Love & Hip Hop: The Final Chapter” this fall. The event will celebrate the show's legacy, explore its cultural influence, and revisit its most controversial and talked-about moments, marking the conclusion of one of reality television’s most enduring franchises.
