How One Judging Call May Have Put World Title Out Of Reach For Team USA

At the 2026 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam, the U.S. women's gymnastics team secured a silver medal after a narrow loss to China by just 0.233 points, ending their streak of seven consecutive world titles. The Chinese team's victory marked their first women's world title since 2006, and only their second in modern history. While the U.S. team had a strong showing overall, the close defeat was partly attributed to a controversial judging call that significantly lowered the score of American gymnast Skye Blakely during the team final.

The critical moment came during the third rotation on the balance beam when Blakely received a score of 13.266, much lower than her 14.166 from the qualifying round despite a similar routine. Although Blakely's execution score remained consistent, her difficulty score dropped by 0.9 due to a ruling that her switch-half leap was short of rotation. This deduction removed the skill's difficulty value and nullified a dance series compositional requirement, resulting in a substantial scoring penalty that shifted the team’s lead in China’s favor.

USA Gymnastics, including High Performance Technical Lead Chellsie Memmel, who is also an experienced judge and former Olympic medalist, expressed frustration at the decision. Memmel explained that the under-rotation of the leap led to the loss of 0.4 points initially, with an additional 0.5 points lost by missing the dance series requirement. This one small judging call created a significant scoring gap, putting Team USA at a disadvantage heading into the final apparatus where they could have potentially overtaken China.

Despite this setback, Skye Blakely remains a standout performer, having qualified for four individual finals, including the all-around, vault, uneven bars, and balance beam. Memmel has indicated that Blakely will work on perfecting the leap or adopting an alternate combination to avoid similar issues going forward. The U.S. team left Rotterdam with an Olympic berth and medals in hand, but the narrow loss and judging controversy underscore the fine margins that define elite gymnastics competition.
