IndyCar Heading To Spain In 2027 For First Race In Europe In 20 Years

The NTT IndyCar Series is set to make a significant return to Europe in 2027 with a race scheduled at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain on July 18. This marks the first IndyCar race outside North America since 2013 and signals a major international expansion for the series. A decade-long agreement has been reached between IndyCar, Spanish government officials, and the track promoters, reflecting a long-term commitment to this new chapter. The race is especially meaningful as it serves as a homecoming for Alex Palou, a five-time IndyCar champion and native of Barcelona, who was actively involved in securing the deal.

Alex Palou's return to race in his home region is a highlight for the 2027 season. Palou, who races for Chip Ganassi Racing, has been a dominant force in IndyCar, capturing five championships by 2026 and becoming only the second driver in series history to win four consecutive titles. Growing up just 20 minutes from the Montmeló track, Palou expressed excitement about competing in front of home fans, many of whom have awaited the chance to see him race in person. His participation helped shape the negotiations and deal finalization, underscoring his integral role beyond just being a competitor.

The chosen venue, Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, is a prestigious motorsport facility that opened in 1991 and is known for hosting notable events such as Formula 1 and MotoGP. The track's 4.657-kilometer layout features a challenging mix of high-speed corners and technical sections, making it a favorite among drivers and fans alike. Beyond its racing pedigree, the site benefits from extensive infrastructure and international recognition, which officials believe will help elevate IndyCar’s global presence. Circuit representatives view the inclusion of IndyCar as a strategic move to diversify their event offerings and attract a broader audience.

IndyCar leadership sees this European race as a milestone in their broader strategy of international growth. CEO Mark Miles hailed the announcement as a monumental development that reflects the series’ competitive appeal and expanding fan base. The 2027 schedule will be unveiled soon and will notably exclude some existing races such as Nashville Superspeedway and the 2026 one-time Washington DC event. With this move to Europe, IndyCar aims to enhance its global footprint, showcasing its unique style of wheel-to-wheel racing in one of the world's premier motorsport destinations.
