Yankees Moving On From $90 Million 2-Time All-Star Contract, Opening Payroll

The New York Yankees are heading into the offseason with significant decisions ahead as they aim to deepen their postseason roster while balancing large financial commitments to key players like Aaron Judge and Gerrit Cole. The front office has shown a willingness to absorb costs associated with moving on from veteran players who no longer fit their future plans, which might lead to parting ways with slugger Giancarlo Stanton, a player hampered by frequent injuries. Meanwhile, the team is about to officially close out two dead-money contracts from past veterans, thereby clearing their books from lingering financial obligations.

One of the contracts winding down is that of outfielder Aaron Hicks, who had a 2026 club option with a $1 million buyout, which had been a financial burden for the Yankees. The second and more impactful contract closing is that of DJ LeMahieu, a two-time All-Star infielder who signed a six-year, $90 million deal covering the 2021 to 2026 seasons. Although LeMahieu was released in July 2025 with nearly $22 million remaining on his contract, the Yankees remained responsible for the remaining payments until the deal’s expiration. His release came shortly after a demotion to the bench, marking the end of an expensive commitment for the franchise.

With the expiration of LeMahieu’s contract, the Yankees gain valuable payroll flexibility, which could shape their offseason moves. However, while this financial clarity removes a significant burden, it doesn't necessarily guarantee a major spending spree. The team still faces the challenge of strategically addressing roster needs around existing stars and turning newfound financial capacity into a more balanced and competitive lineup as they pursue a deeper playoff run.

Following his Yankees tenure, DJ LeMahieu has transitioned into a managerial role, taking the helm of the Royal Oak Leprechauns, a collegiate summer baseball team he had supported as a donor and board member. This new role represents LeMahieu’s first experience managing and reflects his continued involvement in baseball beyond his playing career. For the Yankees, the end of these contracts marks a crucial reset point as the organization prepares for upcoming roster and payroll decisions in an increasingly competitive league landscape.
