‘Wildwood’ Filmmakers Detail The Long Road To Laika’s New Stop-Motion Film

Laika Studios is set to release its sixth stop-motion animated feature, *Wildwood*, this Friday in theaters across the U.S. Directed by Travis Knight and scripted by Chris Butler, the film adapts Colin Meloy’s 2011 fantasy novel. The story centers on a young teen, Prue McKeel (voiced by Peyton Elizabeth Lee), who ventures with her classmate Curtis (Jacob Tremblay) into a magical forest called the Impassable Wilderness, searching for her abducted baby brother. Along their journey, they encounter various enchanted creatures and factions, including one led by a grieving aristocrat named Alexandra, voiced by Carey Mulligan.

Laika maintains its commitment to pure artistry by continuing to produce every frame of *Wildwood* by hand, rejecting artificial intelligence entirely. This handcrafted approach is integral to Laika’s identity, underscored by Knight’s vision of stop-motion as a celebration of human creativity and devotion. The film's creation was a vast, years-long labor of love, with Butler developing the challenging script over 14 years and the stop-motion filming taking six years to complete. Knight praised the exceptional dedication required, describing these films as being “cared into existence.”

The adaptation process was particularly complex due to the novel’s dense mythology and expansive world-building. Knight, who is also Laika’s CEO, brought Butler on as a close collaborator early on to help condense the 500-page book while preserving its intensity and richness. Their partnership shaped *Wildwood*’s narrative to balance faithful adaptation with new creative elements necessary for the cinematic form. Butler acknowledged that Knight’s confidence in pushing the story’s practical limits allowed them to envision ambitious sequences despite stop-motion’s challenges.

Among the film’s highlights is a climactic battle scene described as the most complex ever attempted in stop-motion animation, involving 3,000 puppets and intricate choreography, reminiscent of epic live-action battles like *The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers*. With voice talents including Angela Bassett, Mahershala Ali, and Awkwafina, *Wildwood* represents Laika’s boldest and most intricate project to date. Butler believes the long development and production timeline has culminated in “the best thing we’ve ever done,” promising an artistic triumph true to Laika’s legacy.
