EA Left Boxing Fans Hanging For 15 Years After Fight Night Champion, So What Went Wrong?

EA Sports officially announced the revival of its Fight Night boxing franchise, nearly 15 years after the last installment, Fight Night Champion, released in 2011. The franchise had previously seen significant success, with over 9.5 million copies sold across five mainline games before EA shifted focus to the UFC fighting series in 2014. As of the announcement on October 20, 2026, details like the new game's official title, platforms, and release date remain undisclosed, but fans are eager to see the return of this celebrated boxing game.

The main reason behind the franchise's long hiatus was never fully clarified by EA, but widely cited factors include the high costs associated with licensing prominent boxers such as Floyd Mayweather, who reportedly demanded large appearance fees. Unlike leagues such as the NFL or NBA, where licensing deals cover entire rosters, boxing requires individual agreements with fighters, creating complex and costly negotiations for publishers. EA’s pivot to focusing on EA Sports UFC in 2014 reflected these licensing and developmental challenges, leaving boxing fans waiting for over a decade.

A significant element in overcoming these hurdles appears to be Turki Alalshikh’s involvement, linked to EA’s Saudi-backed ownership. Alalshikh’s connections within the boxing world and ties to Zuffa Boxing offer a valuable advantage by potentially providing a stable, licensed roster of fighters. Zuffa Boxing’s extensive roster, which includes emerging and established names like Conor Benn and Efe Ajagba, could serve as a de facto fighters’ association for the game, helping to secure a solid lineup for the new Fight Night entry.

With this new structure, EA is better positioned to revive the Fight Night series with a comprehensive roster while avoiding past licensing complications. Although the game’s exact features and release timeline await official confirmation, EA's announcement signals a renewed commitment to boxing fans. The revived franchise could bring fresh competition to new boxing titles like Undisputed 2, reigniting interest in virtual boxing gaming.
