SpaceX locks in $40B GPU financing deal with Apollo

SpaceX has secured a groundbreaking $40 billion financing arrangement to fund the acquisition of AI-related GPUs and data center hardware. This agreement, with Apollo Global Management, involves Apollo purchasing the equipment and leasing it to SpaceX for a term of around five years. The deal, expected to finalize by the end of 2026 with leases commencing in early 2027, represents the largest committed GPU financing to date and offers SpaceX an alternative funding strategy beyond conventional debt. CFO Bret Johnsen highlighted that the lease supports their growth ambitions while benefiting from remarkably short payback periods on AI infrastructure investments.

This massive financing deal will supply SpaceX with Nvidia’s latest Vera Rubin GPUs to boost its terrestrial compute capabilities. The investment aligns with SpaceX’s plan to rapidly expand its AI infrastructure alongside its Starlink satellite internet and rocket launch operations. In the third quarter of 2026, SpaceX’s AI business outperformed market expectations, accounting for $7.6 billion of its $14.6 billion revenue—surpassing earnings from Starlink and space launches combined. Capital expenditures for the company soared to nearly $20 billion in that period, with projections of $35 billion to $40 billion in spending for the fourth quarter alone.

This announcement comes amid increasing turbulence in the AI infrastructure financing scene, where many specialized AI compute firms are struggling to attract capital due to concerns about high costs and uncertain profits. Elon Musk used the opportunity to contrast SpaceX’s strong financial position, supported by steady revenues from Starlink and launches, with the challenges facing over 200 neocloud companies that operate solely within AI compute rental markets. Musk predicted significant consolidation or failure among these firms, given their lack of diverse revenue streams.

SpaceX’s landmark GPU financing not only underscores its commitment to dominating AI compute but also signals growing investor confidence in companies with broader business models and reliable cash flows. By leveraging Apollo’s support, SpaceX is better positioned to scale its AI services like Grok and Cursor while managing funding risks in an uncertain market environment. The deal further confirms SpaceX’s role as a major player extending beyond space and satellite ventures into leading-edge AI technology infrastructure.
