Amazon's ‘Project Hail Mary’ Soars To $160 Million Profit

Amazon's sci-fi film *Project Hail Mary*, starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, has generated a substantial box office profit of $157.6 million in 2026. The film, based on Andy Weir’s bestseller, earned an impressive $684.5 million globally and received high praise, scoring 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. Its success was fueled not only by its theatrical run but also by driving new subscriptions on Amazon's Prime Video and MGM+ streaming platforms.

The movie's production was managed through an Amazon UK subsidiary, Hail Leo UK Productions, which benefited from the UK's Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit. This government program reimbursed Amazon $50 million out of the total $234.7 million spent on making the film, lowering the net production cost to $184.7 million. The UK filings, which are publicly available, reveal detailed cost breakdowns not usually accessible for U.S. productions, providing a clearer picture of the film’s financials.

Amazon's revenue share from theaters is typically around 50%, which means the company took in approximately $342.3 million after box office splits. Deducting the net production costs leaves the reported profit of $157.6 million from theatrical distribution alone. However, marketing expenses, which can be substantial, were not disclosed by Amazon, and those would reduce that figure. Still, the film's strong critical reception and box office appeal mark a win in Amazon's strategy to compete with major Hollywood studios.

Streaming revenue further complicates the total profitability calculation since subscription fees cover a vast library of content rather than individual titles. *Project Hail Mary* helped increase the value of Amazon’s streaming offerings, fueling overall subscriber growth and third-party subscription sales. This multi-pronged revenue approach highlights how Amazon leverages big-budget films as strategic “tentpoles” to support its broader entertainment ecosystem beyond just movie ticket sales.
