World Bank President Ajay Banga stated that despite rising interest rates influenced by increased demand from artificial intelligence (AI), the availability of capital is not a significant problem. In an interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” he highlighted that the World Bank mobilized $112 billion last year, a substantial increase compared to three years ago. Banga noted that while some investors express concern about circular financing and AI-related business models, emerging markets remain less hesitant as their investments target infrastructure projects such as bridges and roads, alongside more modest AI applications.
Banga differentiated the investment patterns between emerging and developed markets, explaining that the latter seek funding for larger AI endeavors, which contrasts with the smaller-scale AI uses pursued by developing countries. He emphasized that the World Bank manages private capital carefully, ensuring it is not directed towards governments, which helps mitigate worries about debt crises and challenges stemming from rising bond yields seen in other nations. This strategy allows the institution to maintain financial stability despite global economic uncertainties.
The World Bank chief affirmed his belief in AI's transformative and profitable potential, while acknowledging the unpredictability of the path ahead. He cautioned that obstacles or “bumps in the road” are inevitable, though the timing of such disruptions cannot be predicted. Banga’s remarks come ahead of multiple interest rate decisions by central banks worldwide, as policymakers grapple with the broader economic impact of AI on capital demand and labor markets.
Founded in 1944, the World Bank’s mission centers on eradicating poverty and fostering economic prosperity through international cooperation and funding initiatives. Prior to leading the institution, Ajay Banga held executive roles including CEO of Mastercard and vice chair at General Atlantic. His leadership reflects a focus on leveraging capital for sustainable growth, balancing the excitement around AI with prudent financial oversight.
