Samsung Electronics shares slid despite record profit in the third-quarter

Samsung Electronics reported a record third-quarter operating profit of 107.44 trillion won ($68 billion), marking a massive 783.11% increase year over year and slightly below analysts’ expectations of 107.66 trillion won. The company’s revenue rose 126.88% compared to the same period last year, reaching 195.25 trillion won ($124 billion). Despite these strong financial results, Samsung’s shares fell by 5% in early Seoul trading following the earnings announcement. The company emphasized its commitment to expanding sales of advanced memory chips designed for artificial intelligence (AI) applications and securing long-term contracts amid growing market demand.

The semiconductor division was the primary driver of Samsung’s quarterly success, reporting 147.1 trillion won in revenue and 106.5 trillion won in operating profit. This segment benefited from increased sales of high-bandwidth memory (HBM4) and solid-state drives for servers, reflecting robust demand in the AI and data storage markets. Samsung also announced a 30 trillion won cash dividend for shareholders in the third quarter, equivalent to 4,601 won per share, and plans to return between 55 trillion and 75 trillion won to shareholders throughout the year through dividends and share buybacks. The company will finalize details on shareholder returns in a board meeting in late January 2027.

Despite the record-breaking earnings, market sentiment remained muted, with some investors underwhelmed by the results. Josh Gilbert, lead analyst for APAC at eToro, noted that the AI sector’s recent hype has conditioned investors to view exceptional results as the baseline rather than a catalyst for stock gains. He pointed out that Samsung’s profitability is now heavily concentrated in its memory chip business, making it less diversified than it appears. Gilbert stressed that the company’s future success will hinge significantly on memory chip pricing and demand dynamics, spotlighting concerns about the company’s narrow earnings base.

Looking forward, Samsung expects AI infrastructure investments to accelerate in 2027, driving tighter memory chip supply and increasing sales opportunities for its high-performance HBM memory and other server-related products. The company recently committed $500 million, alongside affiliates, to a $1 billion investment in Helix Digital Infrastructure, an AI infrastructure firm, and forged a strategic partnership and led a funding round with French AI startup Mistral AI to integrate AI technologies into its semiconductor design and manufacturing processes. These moves underline Samsung’s focus on AI to sustain its leadership in the semiconductor industry as it adapts to evolving technology trends.
