Chipotle Mexican Grill's shares surged 7% after the company reported its third-quarter results for 2026 and shared positive guidance on same-store sales growth. CEO Scott Boatwright expressed confidence that the momentum would continue through the end of the year, despite ongoing industry headwinds. He highlighted that their strategic initiatives are gaining traction, providing the company with tools to navigate a challenging market environment. Although early October saw some softness in sales, traffic has since rebounded, boosting optimism for the fourth quarter.
The company reported mixed results for the quarter ending September 30, with earnings per share of 27 cents, slightly below the 29 cents expected by analysts. Revenue met expectations at $3.29 billion, representing a 9.6% increase fueled by new restaurant openings. However, Chipotle's restaurant-level operating margin declined from 24.5% to 23.3%, impacted by costs. Net income fell to $339.9 million from $382.1 million a year earlier, reflecting ongoing operational expenses despite growing sales.
During the quarter, Chipotle expanded its footprint by opening 84 company-owned locations and five international restaurants operated by licensees. Notably, low-income consumers outpaced their high-income counterparts in spending for the first time this year, a trend that CEO Boatwright said was not driven by discounts. This increased spending from a new customer base bodes well for the chain’s traffic and sales growth. The company reaffirmed its forecast of low-single-digit same-store sales growth for the full year.
Looking ahead, Chipotle plans to open between 340 and 360 new company-owned stores in the U.S. and Canada throughout 2027, alongside 15 to 25 international sites. CFO Adam Rymer projected same-store sales growth of about 2% in the fourth quarter, emphasizing confidence in the company’s strong finish to the year. Despite challenges including supply disruptions related to food safety concerns, Chipotle demonstrated resilience, maintaining steady growth in traffic and sales.
