One passport isn’t enough for some wealthy Chinese. Here’s where they’re looking next

Some wealthy Chinese are increasingly willing to sacrifice their Chinese citizenship in favor of obtaining foreign passports, driven by growing government scrutiny of offshore wealth, tax concerns, and the desire for enhanced international mobility. China does not allow dual citizenship, so those seeking alternative passports must formally renounce their Chinese nationality. Immigration and wealth advisors report a noticeable rise in affluent Chinese individuals actively considering and taking steps toward renunciation, especially after new punitive measures on offshore trusts and income taxes took effect in July 2026.

The Caribbean region has become a particularly popular destination for obtaining a second passport quickly, with countries like Antigua and Barbuda offering citizenship-by-investment programs that can be completed in around six months. Other global hotspots for residency or citizenship include Europe, with Portugal, Italy, and Hungary attracting interest through their golden visa and residency programs. Portugal offers a respected path for eventual citizenship, while Italy’s tax incentives and Hungary’s affordable investment routes provide additional attractive options for wealthy Chinese individuals seeking flexibility without immediately relinquishing Chinese nationality.

Singapore remains a favored Asian hub for its political stability, wealth management infrastructure, and quality of life, with many wealthy families considering permanent residency with an eye toward eventual naturalization. Australia and Malaysia are also drawing attention for their educational opportunities and lifestyle benefits. Migration consultancy firms note a broader trend of Chinese families exploring a combination of Caribbean citizenship and Asian residencies, reflecting tailored strategies to balance mobility, tax optimization, and family security.

While inquiries into overseas citizenship have grown by about one-third since mid-2026, experts caution that expressing interest does not always lead to formal renunciation of Chinese citizenship or physical relocation. The decision to give up Chinese nationality is often weighed carefully by those whose business ties or wealth remain closely linked to China. Typically, the most determined candidates for renunciation are those whose assets and operations are largely offshore, seeking to diversify their passport portfolios and global bases amid the evolving geopolitical and financial landscape.
