Live Sports Streaming Is Booming, And Broadcast Networks Are Fighting Back

The live sports streaming market is rapidly expanding, with traditional broadcast networks intensifying their efforts to maintain dominance amid competition from digital streaming platforms. A landmark event will be Jay-Z’s performance as the Super Bowl LXI halftime show in February 2027, which Disney+ will stream for the first time, marking a major step in combining legacy broadcasters like ABC and ESPN with digital-first services. In February 2026, NBCUniversal showcased how to maximize reach by delivering the Super Bowl, Winter Olympics, and NBA All-Star Game across NBC, Peacock, and Telemundo, drawing massive audiences including 125.6 million viewers for the Super Bowl and 23.5 million for the Olympics.

Traditional networks are fiercely protecting their foothold, as sports programming continues to be a major driver of TV viewership and advertising revenue. Sports accounted for 29.2% of all ad-supported TV viewing among adults aged 25-54 in late 2025, with streaming platforms capturing nearly half of all ad-supported viewership in the same period. NBC’s strategic cross-platform presentation in 2026 sold out premium ad slots well in advance and helped Peacock achieve its best subscriber month, demonstrating the continued appeal and economic power of marquee sports events. Disney is following suit for the 2027 Super Bowl by offering multiple viewing options through Disney+, ESPN apps, and traditional TV.

Streaming giants like Amazon, Netflix, YouTube, and Apple have been steadily increasing their live sports offerings to challenge broadcasters. Amazon expanded NFL Thursday Night Football, NBA, and NASCAR coverage, even integrating shoppable TV experiences for special events like NFL Black Friday games. Netflix introduced sports content involving WWE and NFL holiday games, enhancing these with entertainment spectacles such as Beyoncé’s halftime show. YouTube leverages NFL Sunday Ticket and content creators for added engagement, while Apple secured rights to Major League Soccer, Friday Night Baseball, and Formula 1, highlighting a broad and competitive live sports ecosystem online.

Meanwhile, sports leagues and teams themselves are venturing into direct-to-consumer streaming, further disrupting the traditional broadcast and streaming balance. The NFL, NBA, and MLB operate premium services, and individual franchises like the Portland Trail Blazers, Utah Jazz, Phoenix Suns, and Dallas Mavericks have launched their own platforms enabling fans to watch games live without cable or satellite. This shift allows teams to control advertising, gather fan data directly, and capture a larger share of revenue. However, the sustainability and audience appetite for multiple live sports services remain to be seen as the industry continues evolving.
