Hegseth reportedly fires U.S. top military planner as Trump downplays Iran peace talks

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has dismissed Lieutenant General Brett Sylvia from his role as head of strategy, plans, and policy on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, according to reports from the Associated Press. Sylvia, who has since retired, was removed without a publicly stated reason, and no successor has been named. This action is seen amid growing concerns that the U.S. might renew military strikes against Iran following the midterm elections.

The situation has intensified with U.S. President Donald Trump making ambiguous statements about Iran over the weekend, saying he was deciding between making a deal or “finishing it off.” Trump also denied that any formal peace negotiations were taking place, suggesting that any talks related to Iran were minimal and focused on humanitarian aid such as medical supplies. Meanwhile, U.S. officials are reportedly warning Middle Eastern countries to prepare for both potential U.S. military actions and Iranian retaliatory moves.

At the same time, Vice President JD Vance is reported to have reached out to a hard-line Iranian official in an effort to rekindle peace talks, despite Trump’s public dismissal of ongoing diplomacy. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded by affirming that Iran remains open to diplomatic efforts, emphasizing Tehran’s ongoing communication with intermediaries focused on implementing Iran’s recently proposed “7-Day Plan.” This plan includes terms for reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz and resuming commercial maritime passage if hostilities cease and Iran's frozen assets are released.

The 7-Day Plan was put forward last month as a potential route to de-escalate tensions in the region, promising renewed negotiations with Washington conditional on certain actions. However, the removal of a key top military strategist from the Pentagon and the ambiguous stance from U.S. leadership signal uncertainty in the direction of U.S.-Iran relations moving forward. Observers will be closely watching developments after the midterms, particularly regarding military and diplomatic maneuvers around Iran.
