The R2 SUV is already Rivian’s best-selling vehicle

Rivian's R2 SUV has quickly become the automaker's top-selling vehicle, signaling a strong market response shortly after its June launch. While exact sales figures for the third quarter were not disclosed, Rivian's confidence in the model’s performance led the company to raise its delivery guidance for 2026. The updated forecast now expects deliveries to exceed 67,000 vehicles, surpassing previous projections and breaking a multi-year trend in which Rivian struggled to deliver over 50,000 units per year.

The success of the R2 comes despite the loss of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit last year and regulatory shifts that have caused some traditional automakers to reduce their focus on pure electric vehicles. Rivian sees the R2’s appeal in a U.S. market with limited high-quality EV options at a competitive price point. The company views the R2 as a key driver for its long-term growth and profitability, with a pricing strategy that starts just below $60,000, and plans to introduce more affordable trims at $53,990 later this year and as low as $44,990 in 2027.

Rivian’s third-quarter production numbers were robust, with 19,751 vehicles built and 19,248 delivered, marking a 45% increase compared to the same period last year. A significant factor behind this growth was the launch of a second production shift at its Illinois factory. Although the company did not provide exact sales breakdowns, it attributed much of the quarterly increase to the R2 SUV’s contribution. Financially, Rivian posted $2.2 billion in revenue during the quarter and reduced its net loss to $913 million, an improvement from last year's third quarter.

The R2’s rapid rise shows Rivian’s successful scaling efforts and ability to tap into a broader consumer base without reliance on federal incentives. The company’s strategy to bring an affordable, premium electric SUV to market at speed could reshape its competitive positioning in the EV sector. With further lower-cost variants arriving next year, the R2 is poised to cement its status as a crucial product in Rivian’s lineup and a catalyst for future expansion.
