French AI firm Mistral recently made public the weights for its trillion-parameter open-source model, Mistral Large 4 (ML4), known as "Le Chonk." Released earlier this month, ML4 is designed to offer organizations, including government entities, direct access to advanced AI capabilities without relying on proprietary providers like OpenAI or Anthropic. CEO Arthur Mensch emphasized that AI should empower users rather than dominate them, and ML4 exemplifies this by delivering top-tier performance with significantly lower compute and capital needs than closed models.
Mistral positions ML4 as a state-of-the-art solution, particularly suited for cybersecurity applications, allowing enterprises and public sector institutions to detect, analyze, and respond to cyber threats efficiently. Compared to its leading Chinese open-weight rival GLM-5.3, ML4 uses 47% fewer tokens per task, making it more cost-effective. The model also claimed top rankings for agentic coding on Artificial Analysis’ Coding Agent Index, strengthening its credentials for automating complex coding and cyber defense tasks.
The release of ML4’s weights through platforms like Hugging Face and Mistral’s API enables users to deploy the model internally within their own infrastructure. Pierre Stock, Mistral's VP of Science, explained that this open-weight model prevents external cutoffs of access, granting businesses and governments full control over their AI-powered defense tools. He highlighted ML4’s potential to support real-time identification and coordination in cybersecurity incidents while promoting widespread availability of advanced AI defenses to counter rising malicious threats.
While acknowledging that risks from rogue AI agents exist, Mistral's leadership cautions against alarmism, stating security is a manageable challenge. The company advocates open AI access as essential to strengthening the cybersecurity ecosystem broadly, enabling faster, more robust defenses as cyberattacks grow more sophisticated. ML4’s public availability represents a strategic move to empower organizations with sovereign control over their cyber defenses in an increasingly perilous digital environment.
