Nvidia weighs playing the cosigner for Nscale’s AI data center in West Virginia

Nvidia is considering a significant financial role as a possible cosigner for Nscale's AI data center project in West Virginia, which is backed by a massive $44.6 billion contract with AI company Anthropic. This move would mean Nvidia guarantees billions in debt financing to help Nscale cover the costs of construction and electricity for the data center campus, signaling the chipmaker’s commitment to supporting its customers amid growing investor caution around the AI industry’s heavy capital expenditures.

The proposed arrangement involves Nvidia providing a residual value guarantee where, if Nscale defaults on payments, Nvidia would temporarily take control of the facility and work to find new tenants or buyers. This step marks a deeper level of financial involvement than Nvidia’s prior support, which focused primarily on leases and chip sales. The project itself has experienced delays and operational challenges, including local flooding issues and certification hurdles, underscoring the complexity of scaling such a large infrastructure.

Nscale has ambitious plans to deploy nearly 500,000 advanced AI chips but currently operates only around 25,000, highlighting execution risks. Meanwhile, Anthropic, which relies on multiple chip suppliers, has filed for an IPO amid concerns from investors and credit rating agencies about how it will manage the financial demands of its rapid expansion. Nvidia’s willingness to back Nscale financially aligns with keeping a major Anthropic customer stable, mitigating potential fallout across the AI hardware ecosystem.

Nvidia has already committed roughly $170 billion in investments and credit to AI cloud ventures, including a $1 billion convertible financing deal with Nscale this past September. However, the market pressure on neocloud companies like Nscale has intensified as stock prices have fallen sharply. Nvidia’s potential guarantee reflects the high stakes involved in sustaining AI infrastructure providers through this volatile growth phase and securing ongoing demand for its next-generation Vera Rubin chips in critical data center builds.
