Salesforce is expanding its presence in defense technology by acquiring Rune Technologies for approximately $375 million in cash and stock. Rune, founded in 2024, develops AI-driven software that assists the U.S. military in forecasting supply demands and managing logistics in active field operations. This purchase aligns with Salesforce’s Missionforce unit, which targets national security and defense clients and has experienced an 80% year-over-year growth fueled in part by a $5.6 billion, 10-year contract with the U.S. Army.
By incorporating Rune’s real-time logistics capabilities, Salesforce aims to enhance Missionforce’s offerings beyond administrative functions to include direct support for battlefield operations. Rune has previously raised $30 million from notable investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, Point72 Ventures, and IQT, a nonprofit backed by the CIA. The startup’s valuation stood at $127 million after its Series A funding led by Human Capital last year.
This acquisition is part of Salesforce’s broader merger and acquisition strategy throughout 2026, which has seen the company acquire other technology firms to bolster its AI and customer engagement tools. Noteworthy deals include the $3.6 billion purchase of AI agent platform Fin, the $1.2 billion acquisition of Qualified, and the agreement to buy Listen Labs, which comes after the startup declined a $125 million funding round at a $1.5 billion valuation.
Salesforce has not officially commented on the deal. However, the acquisition of Rune marks a significant step for the CRM giant in deepening its capabilities in defense technology and AI-powered logistics, enhancing its value proposition to government and military clients through Missionforce.
