2026 Major League Baseball Free Agency Begins For Qualified Players

The 2026 Major League Baseball free agency period officially opened following the conclusion of the World Series. Players qualify for free agency after accumulating six years of Major League service time, defined as spending at least 172 days on a team's active roster or injured list during a 187-day regular season. This milestone allows these players to negotiate with any team, making several high-profile players available on the market.

Among the top free agents is left-handed pitcher Tarik Skubal, who turned 30 in November and had standout performances in 2024 and 2025, earning All-Star honors both years. Skubal split the 2026 season between the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers, posting a solid 12-7 record with a 2.72 ERA and 0.89 WHIP across 26 starts. Jazz Chisholm Jr., a versatile left-handed hitting position player for the New York Yankees, is also highly sought after. Known for his speed and baserunning, Chisholm stole 41 bases in 2026 and has been an All-Star in 2022 and 2025.

Other notable players entering free agency include right-handed outfielder Seiya Suzuki from the Cubs, who hit 26 home runs and drove in 86 runs last season, and Freddy Peralta, a right-handed starting pitcher who improved after a mid-season trade to the Tampa Bay Rays. Relief pitcher Adrian Morejon, with a strong 2.83 ERA in 76 games for the Padres, and Randy Arozarena, a contact-hitting outfielder with 27 home runs over eight big league seasons, are also key names to watch.

The list of free agents extends to include accomplished hitters like Luis Arraez, a four-time All Star and two-time batting title winner, recently traded to the Philadelphia Phillies, alongside pitchers Trevor Rogers, Michael King, and veteran Sonny Gray. As teams begin negotiations, these players have the potential to significantly impact the competitive landscape for the 2027 season and beyond.
