TikTok is aggressively expanding beyond its roots as a short-video platform to become a “super app,” integrating multiple digital services into one platform. Recently, it introduced an in-app restaurant guide called “Must Eat,” which leverages over 40 million posts and comments to highlight popular dining spots, allowing users to filter by criteria like cuisine, price, and location. This positions TikTok in direct competition with review and local discovery services such as Yelp and Google Maps, marking a strategic push to play a larger role in users’ everyday decisions.
Payments are another area TikTok is exploring to broaden its ecosystem. The company is reportedly developing a feature that would enable users to send money through direct messages via TikTok Pay, a service currently active in Southeast Asia for shopping transactions. Additionally, TikTok has sought regulatory approval in Brazil to offer lending and payment services, signaling its ambitions to become a fintech player. Integrating financial services within the app could increase user engagement, unlock new revenue streams, and heighten its competitiveness with fintech companies and e-commerce platforms.
TikTok is also deepening its involvement in entertainment and sports content to encourage users to spend more time within the app. It launched a dedicated FIFA World Cup hub featuring scores, highlights, and exclusive videos from players, powered by its sports product “TikTok GamePlan.” Partnerships with Major League Soccer and Major League Baseball further this initiative. Beyond sports, TikTok has embraced scripted microdramas through a Minis section and a standalone app for short-form series. Casual games have been added to enhance social interaction via direct messages, gradually transforming TikTok into an all-in-one entertainment platform.
The company’s evolution follows earlier major moves like TikTok Shop, which recorded U.S. sales of $15.82 billion in 2025 after rapid growth. TikTok GO, launched in May 2026, allows users to discover and book hotels and experiences without leaving the app, directly challenging Google’s travel-related services. Although TikTok once tried running a music streaming service, it shut that down in favor of enhancing music discovery through partnerships. With continuous improvements to its search and local discovery features, TikTok is positioning itself to become the default app for a wide array of digital activities, aspiring to emulate the success of Chinese super apps like WeChat.
