OpenAI might rebrand its data centers as ‘AI compute campuses’

OpenAI is considering rebranding its data centers as "AI compute campuses" as part of a broader effort to reshape public perception around the infrastructure required for artificial intelligence. This move coincides with the company planning a significant public relations campaign following the U.S. midterm elections, which could see Democrats reclaim control of the House and possibly the Senate. OpenAI’s chief global affairs officer, Chris Lehane, has emphasized that AI will be a pivotal issue in the 2028 presidential race, making it crucial for the company to influence how AI-related developments are discussed.

Lehane outlined several strategies that OpenAI is advocating to ensure a balanced AI policy framework. Among these is the idea of implementing "AI speed limits" to carefully pace technological advances. Lehane also stressed the importance of presenting AI as a tool that empowers everyday users, and the need for the U.S. government to take a leadership role in shaping international AI standards. The rebranding of data centers to AI compute campuses fits into this effort by potentially easing public opposition by highlighting their role in advancing AI rather than just being seen as unpopular, large server facilities.

Public resistance to data centers remains a significant challenge, with communities in places like British Columbia and Manitoba already protesting new AI server farms. Lehane described the debates around these facilities as both “good and healthy,” underscoring the need for companies like OpenAI to be held accountable to ensure that local communities derive genuine benefits from hosting such projects. This push for transparency and responsibility has also prompted firms like Amazon and Microsoft to stop using non-disclosure agreements in negotiations with local governments regarding data center construction.

OpenAI is thus making a strategic pivot not only in branding but also in framing how AI infrastructure and policy are approached in the coming years. As political dynamics shift post-midterms, the company aims to position itself as a responsible leader in AI development while addressing the controversies tied to the physical footprint of AI technologies. This comprehensive approach—balancing innovation, social acceptance, and regulatory engagement—will be critical for OpenAI’s role in the evolving AI landscape through 2028 and beyond.
