The Data That Reveals Why Warner Bros. Should Open A ‘Harry Potter’ Theme Park

Warner Bros. sits on a lucrative opportunity by potentially launching a standalone Harry Potter theme park and hotel, complementing Universal’s existing Wizarding World lands and Warner Bros. studio tours. The Harry Potter franchise, with over 600 million books sold and $7.8 billion in box office revenue from its film series, enjoys enormous global fan fervor. HBO’s costly upcoming seven-season streaming adaptation, already spending $197 million midway through production, underscores the continuous demand for fresh Potter content, further highlighted by viral fan trends on platforms like TikTok.

Though Universal operates several popular Harry Potter-themed areas, Warner Bros. currently only runs studio tours and is developing an ambitious three-land Potter zone at Abu Dhabi’s Warner Bros. World, which spans 63,000 square meters and includes Diagon Alley, Hogwarts Castle, and the Forbidden Forest. This area is set to offer unprecedented interactive experiences, arguably marking the first dedicated Harry Potter theme park expansion. Meanwhile, Universal’s inclusion of Potter attractions has driven average attendance boosts of 16.5%, with Islands of Adventure reaching a 28.6% increase in 2010.

Warner Bros.’ studio tour in Leavesden, UK, has generated $2 billion in revenue since 2012, becoming a blockbuster in its own right. In 2023, the studio’s revenue topped $219 million, supported by new immersive attractions like the Greenhouse from "Chamber of Secrets." An ongoing $64 million expansion aims to further elevate the tour with advanced indoor experiences. While Warner Bros.’ tour provides behind-the-scenes immersion, Universal’s parks offer thrilling rides and outdoor scenery, but no dedicated Warner Bros. theme park currently combines these strengths.

Warner Bros.’ recent formation of the Global Experiences unit and the parent company’s $110 billion sale to Paramount Skydance—burdened with $80 billion debt—could stimulate the creation of a dedicated Harry Potter park to maximize profit. Such a park would refresh the franchise’s allure beyond the movies, especially as Universal’s Potter lands age and new HBO content debuts. The data strongly suggests that a Warner Bros. Potter theme park would outperform, drawing millions of fans and generating significant revenue growth in the entertainment landscape.
