Google takes Dreambeans to India in bid to bring AI-generated personal stories to the masses

Google has expanded its experimental AI app Dreambeans to India, marking the first launch outside the U.S. The app, available on Android and iOS, now supports 13 Indian languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Punjabi, and Bengali, alongside English. Dreambeans creates personalized, illustrated stories using data from users’ connected Google services like Calendar, Gmail, Photos, and YouTube without needing prompts. Since its U.S. debut in June 2026, the app has been downloaded about 55,000 times, with most downloads occurring after it became widely available to users aged 18 and older.

Google chose India due to strong user interest and the extensive overlap of Google services usage in the country. The app recently added animation features to its AI-generated stories using Google’s Veo video model. However, Dreambeans supports only one language at a time for story generation, which might limit its appeal in India’s multilingual environment where code-switching and Hinglish are common. Users can control which Google services connect to the app and delete their data anytime, with Google assuring that personal information removed from connected services is also deleted from the app’s personalization system.

While the app focuses on creating personal narrative experiences rather than general-purpose AI queries, its reliance on sensitive data from Google accounts has raised privacy concerns. Google product manager Gozde Oznur explained that users can instruct Dreambeans to avoid certain topics, such as business-related information, and that the stories are visible only to the account holder. The app is available exclusively to personal Gmail users, not enterprise accounts, and Google is exploring ways to make Dreambeans more actionable beyond storytelling, potentially helping users act on the generated content.

Google’s Dreambeans aims to broaden access to AI-driven storytelling in India’s vast and diverse internet market by localizing support for multiple languages and leveraging entrenched Google services. The move highlights Google’s effort to expand innovative AI experiences beyond the U.S. while acknowledging linguistic and privacy challenges that need to be addressed for wider adoption in India’s unique digital landscape.
