Stocks soar Wednesday

Stocks surged on Wednesday as Democrats secured major victories in the U.S. midterm elections, flipping control of both the House and Senate. This outcome, coupled with President Donald Trump's acceptance of the results and willingness to cooperate, alleviated political uncertainty that had unsettled markets. The Dow Jones Industrial Average soared 1,569.40 points, or 3.03%, to 53,356.12, marking its best day since April 2025. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite climbed 1.58% and 1.44%, respectively, with energy prices retreating sharply due to expectations for reduced inflationary pressures amid the election outcome.

Investor enthusiasm reflected optimism that a divided Congress would create gridlock, which historically benefits the stock market by limiting sweeping policy changes and regulatory shifts. Stocks with economic sensitivity, such as Walmart and Bank of America, led gains as the market favored more stable sectors. Conversely, technology and data center-related companies felt pressure amid Democratic wins, especially in Texas, where incoming Governor Gina Hinojosa has pledged an immediate moratorium on data center expansions. This weighed on shares of CoreWeave, Nvidia, and SpaceX, highlighting investor concern about increased regulation on AI infrastructure.

The election also spurred gains in renewables and consumer staples sectors, with companies like First Solar and UnitedHealth rallying on expectations of supportive policy shifts. Apple shares hit an all-time high of $354.33, benefiting from the reduced risks around data center construction and lower memory chip costs, despite recent margin pressures. European renewable stocks similarly rallied, reflecting hopes that the new U.S. political landscape will accelerate clean energy initiatives.

On the flip side, sectors tied to defense, prison operations, and certain cloud services stocks declined as markets anticipated less supportive legislation from a Democratic-led Congress. Treasury yields edged down as investors sought safe-haven assets amidst the political transition, while the dollar weakened following the blue wave. Overall, markets responded positively to the Election Day results, viewing the resolution of political uncertainty as a catalyst for sustained economic growth and stability.
