Anthropic is working on a system to prove AI models’ identity

Anthropic has revealed it is developing an open-source system called FlashProve to cryptographically verify which AI model generated a particular output. The technology aims to provide “provable inference,” offering a tamper-resistant guarantee that a response actually came from the claimed AI system. This capability would prevent fraudulent model substitutions, such as companies secretly swapping cheaper models for expensive ones or boosting performance claims by falsely attributing results to powerful models. FlashProve achieves this by matching outputs to a published cryptographic “fingerprint” unique to each model, without exposing sensitive model parameters.

The system has been designed to be lightweight enough for verification on local devices, facilitating users to independently confirm AI outputs. Importantly, the fingerprints don’t reveal a model’s internal weights, allowing proprietary models from commercial AI providers to adopt FlashProve without sacrificing trade secrets. Anthropic published detailed technical documentation and released working code under an open-source license but emphasized that the research is ongoing. They invite broader community input to refine and improve the system, with no immediate plans for internal deployment.

FlashProve addresses a growing need within the AI ecosystem for transparency and trust, especially as AI is increasingly embedded in high-stakes domains like cybersecurity and business decision-making. Developers and companies could use it to prove, for example, that their software was reviewed by a frontier AI model or that a business strategy received validated AI input. This helps potential clients and users verify claims about AI involvement, which have often been difficult to substantiate, helping to build confidence and accountability around AI outputs.

By pioneering cryptographic verification for AI model provenance, Anthropic is tackling one of the sector’s rising challenges amid widespread concerns about AI misuse and misinformation. As AI continues to proliferate across industries, tools like FlashProve could become critical in ensuring transparent, reliable, and auditable AI deployment. The open-source nature of the project may encourage broad industry adoption, leading to an ecosystem where AI outputs can be trusted as honestly sourced from the claimed models.
