China is catching up to Elon Musk’s reusable rockets

China’s state-owned Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) has successfully launched and recovered its Long March 10B orbital rocket booster, marking a significant milestone as the second country after the U.S. to demonstrate booster recovery at this scale. Unlike SpaceX’s Falcon 9, which uses landing legs to touch down on a floating platform, China’s method involves catching the descending booster with netting aboard a specialized recovery ship. This highly technical feat relies on advanced guidance systems, reliable engine restarts, and durability to withstand atmospheric reentry.

CASC plans to reuse the recovered booster by the end of 2026, aiming to lower launch costs and expand China’s space ambitions. With a payload capacity comparable to SpaceX’s Falcon 9, the Long March 10B could enable China’s satellite communication networks and potential orbital data centers to challenge SpaceX’s dominance. Although national security restrictions differentiate global rocket markets, reusable rockets represent a major leap forward for China’s space program and geopolitical influence through cheaper satellite launches for allies.

The development comes amid ongoing competition in reusable rocket technology, with SpaceX maintaining its lead through Falcon 9’s frequent launches and upcoming Starship missions, which recently passed a successful static fire test. Other players like Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin have also achieved booster reuse but face setbacks, while startups like Rocket Lab and Stoke Space are pursuing innovative reusable designs with significant investor support. Media and industry experts consider reusable launch systems as critical to the future of space access and satellite deployment.

This breakthrough highlights the intensifying space race where cost-efficiency and rapid reusability are key. China’s ability to reliably recover and refurbish booster rockets could reduce launch expenses substantially, altering the global space market dynamics and challenging U.S. military and commercial space advantages. As China advances reusable rocket tech, competition with SpaceX and other space companies in emerging markets worldwide—particularly in Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia—is expected to increase, potentially reshaping the future of orbital infrastructure.
