Cardinals Cut Ties With 10-Year MLB Veteran Ryne Stanek After Resurgent Season

The St. Louis Cardinals have opted not to pick up the $6 million team option on veteran reliever Ryne Stanek for the 2027 MLB season, instead agreeing to a $1 million buyout. Stanek, a 10-year MLB veteran and a native of St. Louis, appeared in 70 games during the 2026 season. He posted a 4.02 ERA with 65 strikeouts across 62.2 innings, showing a notable improvement from his previous two seasons with the Mets and Mariners.

Stanek had signed a one-year deal worth $2.5 million last winter, and including the buyout, will have earned $3.5 million for his 2026 performance with the Cardinals. Despite his solid contributions, the team’s decision aligns with its broader strategic focus under baseball operations president Chaim Bloom. The Cardinals are emphasizing youth development and rebuilding, aiming for a return to contention in the longer term rather than immediate roster upgrades.

This move makes Stanek a free agent, and his resurgence during the past season should position him well for securing a longer-term contract with another contender seeking experienced bullpen depth. Analysts have pointed to his fastball velocity, which averaged 98 mph, and his increased use of a now highly effective slider as reasons for his improved effectiveness on the mound last year.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals will continue searching for veteran relievers to complement their developing younger arms. This decision exemplifies the ongoing roster changes as the franchise attempts to build a competitive core for the future, even if it means parting ways with productive established veterans like Stanek.
