Lindsey Vonn Provides Updates On Her 2026 Winter Olympics Injuries

Lindsey Vonn, the renowned American alpine skier and 2010 Olympic downhill gold medalist, has faced an arduous recovery following two severe crashes leading up to and during the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. Over the past nine months, she has undergone eight surgeries to address injuries including a ruptured left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), complex fractures of the lower left leg, and acute compartment syndrome caused by internal bleeding. These injuries forced multiple operations in Italy initially to manage life-threatening complications before she was stabilized and transferred to the U.S. for continued treatment. Her ninth surgery is scheduled soon, with plans to remove surgical hardware and finally repair her ACL.

The intense pain accompanying these injuries has been a major challenge for Vonn, described as the most extreme she has ever experienced despite a history of serious sports-related injuries and surgeries. Early pain management efforts in Italy relied heavily on opioid medications, which caused debilitating side effects such as brain fog and severe nausea without effectively alleviating her discomfort. After returning to the United States, Vonn found significant relief using Journavx, a non-opioid medication approved by the FDA in 2025, which targets nerve sodium channels to block pain signals without the sedation and addiction risks associated with opioids.

Vonn’s experience with Journavx has led her to collaborate with Vertex Pharmaceuticals, the drug’s manufacturer, to promote awareness of alternative pain management options beyond opioids. With hopes to recover within six to nine months post her upcoming surgery, she remains motivated but uncertain about the future of her competitive skiing career. The extent of her injuries and rigorous recovery have made this period a humbling yet growth-fostering journey, teaching her to rely on assistance and adapt both mentally and physically.

Outside of her medical challenges, Vonn is working on a documentary chronicling this difficult phase that has tested her resilience. Though she is not ready to decide on returning to ski racing, which she describes as the most fun last season, she acknowledges that this ordeal has pushed her to a low point but ultimately contributed to her personal strength. Fans and followers eagerly await updates on her recovery and potential comeback in the coming months.
