St. Louis Cardinals May Finally Have Tekoah Roby In Rotation In 2027

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Tekoah Roby is poised to return to the rotation in 2027 after recovering from Tommy John surgery that sidelined him for much of 2025 and 2026. Roby showed promise in the 2026 Arizona Fall League by pitching nearly 10 scoreless innings with 13 strikeouts, crediting his improved command for his performance. Cardinals assistant GM Rob Cerfolio expressed high hopes for Roby, noting his potential when healthy, although a looming player lockout could delay his full return.

Roby, a top pitching prospect five times since 2021, has had a career marked by potential and multiple injuries. He was traded to the Cardinals in 2023 after being drafted by the Texas Rangers, who won the World Series that year. Throughout his journey, he has developed a strong arsenal including a 98 mph fastball, slider, curveball, and changeup, and has focused on command over velocity during rehab to ensure longevity.

Prior to turning professional, Roby earned All-American honors in high school in Pensacola, Florida, and was drafted in the third round with a $775,000 signing bonus. Despite his early setbacks, the Cardinals are optimistic he can become a key contributor, especially given the organization’s reputation for pitching development and the legacy of players like Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith, who was selected at a similar draft position.

The path forward is not guaranteed, however, as a player lockout that could start in December 2026 may impact Roby and other young Cardinals awaiting a chance to prove themselves in spring training. Roby intends to stay in shape during this uncertain period and is balancing personal milestones, including his upcoming marriage, while hoping for a resolution that will allow him to pitch in the 2027 season.
