Why Are The Pacers Dealing With So Many Hamstring Injuries Already?

The Indiana Pacers are facing significant health challenges early in the 2026-27 NBA season, with numerous key players sidelined due to injuries, particularly hamstring strains. After only seven games, six of their 17 players, including stars Tyrese Haliburton and Ivica Zubac, have been ruled out, leading to struggles on both offense and depth. Several reserves such as T.J. McConnell, Ben Sheppard, and Obi Toppin are also injured, compounding the problem and underscoring the team’s difficulty maintaining high-level play without their full roster.

These hamstring injuries come despite a revamped offseason conditioning program intended to mitigate such issues. The Pacers had adopted a longer ramp-up process, aiming to better manage players’ workload after a long summer following a non-playoff season. However, the fast-paced nature of today's NBA game, combined with a schedule that includes frequent back-to-back games, appears to be taking a toll on athletes, making it challenging to avoid soft tissue injuries. Pacers players and coaches alike acknowledge that the increased physicality and speed require evolving training methods to prevent recurring strains.

Coach Rick Carlisle highlighted that the league as a whole is experiencing a spike in early-season injuries, which many attribute to the demands of the modern style of play. Statistical analysis shows the current NBA features more possessions per game, quicker transitions, and more physical rebounding battles than before, increasing player fatigue and susceptibility to injury. Pacers forward Aaron Nesmith and others echoed this view, explaining that it often takes around 20 games for players' bodies to fully adjust to this intensity, but the rapid pace means injuries might be inevitable early on.

Despite these setbacks, the Pacers remain determined to overcome their injury woes and return to competitiveness. After a disappointing 19-win season last year, expectations are higher this campaign, but the team must first regain health to meet those goals. Guard Andrew Nembhard expressed optimism about the group's resilience and ability to improve as the season progresses, emphasizing the fast-moving nature of the NBA and the need to stay focused on getting better despite the rough start.
