Oratomic, a quantum computing startup founded by Caltech physicists, announced a $300 million Series A funding round led by ARCH Venture Partners, Spark Capital, and Khosla Ventures. The company aims to develop the first utility-scale quantum computer by the end of the decade, focusing on an approach that uses lasers as optical tweezers to trap individual atoms for quantum operations. This method allows Oratomic to significantly reduce the number of qubits needed for effective error correction—a crucial step toward building practical and reliable quantum machines.
Unlike many companies currently producing noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) prototypes for research, Oratomic plans to skip the NISQ phase altogether. CEO Dolev Bluvstein highlighted that their breakthrough enables the construction of a useful quantum computer requiring only about 10,000 to 20,000 qubits, a notably smaller amount compared to other startups aiming for million-qubit systems. Oratomic has already demonstrated all the essential components of their technology on a smaller scale, reinforcing confidence in their approach.
The potential applications of a full-scale quantum computer built by Oratomic are vast, ranging from accelerating drug discovery in biotech, optimizing logistics and supply chains, advancing artificial intelligence algorithms, to enhancing cybersecurity through cryptography. The intense investor interest in quantum technology continues to grow, with several startups going public this year and established firms like Rigetti and IonQ experiencing significant share price increases.
Investor Vinod Khosla expressed strong faith in Oratomic’s prospects, describing the $300 million investment as his firm’s largest initial commitment so far. This substantial capital injection aims to propel Oratomic toward creating the first fault-tolerant quantum computer, positioning the company as a major contender in the race for commercially viable quantum technology that could transform multiple industries worldwide.
