Meta acquires AI coding startup Conductor

Meta has acquired Conductor, an AI-powered coding startup founded in 2024, which enables software engineers to launch projects by deploying multiple agents that work in parallel on different components of the same project. The acquisition was confirmed by Meta on November 4, 2026, following an announcement by Conductor’s CEO, Charlie Holtz, who expressed excitement about joining Meta and hinted at upcoming new features expected by early 2027. Conductor’s platform utilizes AI agents sourced from leading labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic, and its services will continue operating as before until early next year, except for its cloud service which will shut down on November 20.

This move comes as Meta intensifies its focus on AI, especially after a period of trailing behind competitors in AI product offerings. Recently, the company launched Muse Code, an AI coding assistant, and has seen significant uptake of its Muse agents, now surpassing 10 million U.S. downloads. Meta’s AI leadership, including Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang and Nat Friedman, head of Superintelligence Labs, are set to work closely with Conductor’s team, reflecting Meta’s strategic push to bolster its AI capabilities through acquisitions and innovation.

Conductor’s product stands out by allowing deployment across cloud, local environments, and even smartphones, facilitating distributed programming efforts via AI without building the agents in-house. The startup’s technology is part of a broader trend in AI-enabled software development tools that aim to improve productivity by automating complex, multi-agent workflows. Meta’s acquisition positions it well in this competitive landscape as it seeks to build more sophisticated AI-assisted developer tools that could integrate deeply with its existing AI initiatives.

Meta has been active in AI acquisitions over the past year, having previously purchased startups like Moltbook, a viral AI agent platform. This purchase of Conductor further demonstrates Meta’s commitment to expanding its AI tooling ecosystem. While Meta has not disclosed financial details of the acquisition, the company’s growing portfolio and the rapid adoption of its AI services highlight its determination to become a leader in AI-driven coding and agent technologies.
