Waymo confirms it’s shaking up its Uber relationship in January 2028

Waymo has announced that starting January 2028, it will end its exclusivity with Uber in the Austin and Atlanta markets. This change means Waymo will begin offering rides directly through its own app, similar to its approach in other cities. The co-CEO of Waymo, Tekedra Mawakana, explained that while the initial partnership with Uber was intended to leverage Uber's scale, the experience for riders has been inconsistent. Many passengers have expressed frustration over not knowing if they will receive a robotaxi or a human-driven vehicle when booking through Uber.

Uber confirmed it intends to continue hosting Waymo’s robotaxis on its platform as long as both companies agree to the terms, though the exclusivity arrangement will end. Mawakana’s remarks follow earlier reports suggesting Waymo was considering an exit from its agreement with Uber, which was originally set to expire in May 2028. She highlighted feedback from riders in Austin and Atlanta indicating a preference for a more direct relationship with Waymo to improve transparency and reliability in booking autonomous rides.

The shift in strategy underscores growing competition among autonomous vehicle companies and ride-hailing platforms. Uber, which collaborates with multiple robotaxi and self-driving vehicle providers, has focused on integrating various autonomous services within its app rather than creating exclusive partnerships. Waymo’s decision to operate independently in these markets will put it in direct competition with Uber’s other autonomous vehicle partners and potentially change the dynamics of robotaxi availability and customer choice.

This update reflects a broader trend in the autonomous vehicle industry toward more customer-facing control by technology providers like Waymo, rather than relying on intermediary platforms. By launching its own app in Austin and Atlanta, Waymo aims to enhance rider experience and strengthen its brand presence in the growing robotaxi market. Both companies continue to express a willingness to cooperate but acknowledge that evolving business models will alter how autonomous rides are accessed by consumers.
