India’s EloElo nabs $80M from NBCUniversal to bet on the country’s rising microdrama market

India's microdrama streaming market is surging, and EloElo, a company behind the popular Story TV app, is capitalizing on this growth. The platform boasts over 33 million active users and offers a vast library of more than 5,000 titles in six languages. Founded in 2020 by former Flipkart executive Saurabh Pandey, EloElo recently secured $80 million in a Series C funding round led by Hornbill Capital and NBCUniversal, raising its total financing to $130 million and valuing the company at $500 million.

The appeal of microdramas lies in their short, serialized format, which matches the consumption patterns of mobile-first viewers in India, a country with over a billion internet users. Story TV users spend an average of 95 minutes daily on the app, indulging in multiple viewing sessions. Pandey highlights that this content approach suits modern audiences better than traditional appointment viewing, as it fits naturally into short breaks throughout the day, heralding a shift in entertainment consumption away from traditional television.

Story TV competes with free platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok by investing in high-quality original content and partnerships, including one with Balaji Telefilms. The service offers ad-supported free content and various subscription models, though paid conversion remains a challenge in India, with only 15 to 17 million monthly paying users out of over 40 million who have ever paid for microdramas. Despite this, EloElo aims to expand its content production significantly with the new funding, believing quality storytelling will drive loyalty.

Beyond microdramas, EloElo is also innovating with AI technologies through its Dolphin AI platform to enhance video creation workflows, aiming to integrate AI as a creative tool rather than a replacement for human directors. The company supports additional apps like the vertical video learning app Master and the AI companion app Voxy AI, currently totalling over 40 million monthly users across its products. EloElo plans to grow its AI and machine learning teams to further solidify its position in the evolving Indian digital entertainment ecosystem.
