Mississippi Senate election: Democrat Scott Colom narrowly leads Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith

In a rare political upset potential in Mississippi, Democrat Scott Colom is narrowly leading Republican incumbent Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith in the Senate race, a state that traditionally leans solidly Republican. As of Thursday afternoon, Colom held a slim advantage of around 1,724 votes out of more than 930,000 ballots counted, with no final result expected until next week due to outstanding absentee and provisional ballots. Colom’s 49.04% share slightly edges Hyde-Smith’s 48.85%, while independent Ty Pinkins captures a small 2.1% of votes.

If Colom wins, it would mark a historic shift in Mississippi’s political landscape, as the state has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1982 nor a Black senator since the Reconstruction Era following the Civil War. Colom is a 43-year-old district attorney who has gained momentum by focusing on voters' immediate interests, contrasting with Hyde-Smith’s approach emphasizing traditional values. Political analysts have expressed surprise at how tight the race has become, given Mississippi's strong Republican history.

The contest has underlying tensions from past political confrontations, including Hyde-Smith blocking Colom’s 2023 nomination to a federal judgeship, citing concerns over his support for transgender athletes and campaign contributions linked controversially to billionaire George Soros. Colom, meanwhile, maintains that his legal approach would abide by the law rather than personal opinions. Hyde-Smith has repeatedly declined to debate and has run a relatively low-profile campaign focused on her base.

The razor-thin margin has prompted the Republican National Committee to seek additional funds for monitoring ballot reviews, framing Mississippi as a critical battleground. The state’s rules allow ballots postmarked by Election Day to be counted if received within five days, a provision that could impact the final tally in Colom’s favor. Both campaigns are awaiting the completion of the count and remain prepared for potential legal challenges, reflecting the high stakes of this unprecedented election.
