Wonder, a food startup founded by serial entrepreneur Marc Lore in 2018, has confidentially filed for an initial public offering (IPO). The company operates a vertically integrated app that offers delivery and takeout from what it calls “the best restaurants from across the country,” consolidating menus from over two dozen virtual restaurant brands in approximately 170 physical locations nationwide. These locations include offerings from celebrity chefs and a wide variety of culinary styles. Beginning November 17, Wonder will launch "Wonder Create," a subscription service allowing influencers and brands to start their own virtual restaurants using Wonder’s infrastructure for a $10 monthly fee.
Marc Lore, known for creating Diapers.com and Jet.com, both of which he sold to Amazon and Walmart respectively, has guided Wonder toward rapid expansion using a blend of physical locations and virtual concepts. Originally envisioned as a food delivery service utilizing sprinter vans with mobile kitchens, Wonder has since developed a brick-and-mortar presence. Its business model emphasizes vertical integration in food delivery, allowing for greater control over operations and customer experience.
In recent years, Wonder has acquired several companies to strengthen its market position, spending over $1 billion on acquisitions such as Grubhub, Blue Apron, and Relay—companies focused on delivery, meal kits, and logistics. Thanks to more than $3 billion in venture capital funding, the company achieved a $9 billion pre-money valuation during its Series D round earlier this year. Proceeds from the IPO are expected to fund additional acquisitions and support Wonder’s goal of improving food accessibility across the U.S.
Despite the promising growth and capital backing, Wonder faces challenges ahead as a public company. The restaurant sector has seen softness in consumer demand, and market volatility has made the IPO environment more unpredictable this year. While IPO proceeds will provide opportunities for further expansion, the company will now encounter heightened investor scrutiny. Lore’s track record and Wonder’s innovative approach position it well, but economic headwinds may influence its market debut and subsequent performance.
