Expedia CEO says AI agents aren’t changing booking habits — yet

Expedia CEO Ariane Gorin recently addressed the impact of artificial intelligence on the travel booking landscape, stating that while AI-powered agents are beginning to influence trip planning, they have not yet altered how customers finalize bookings. Gorin emphasized that AI tools are useful for inspiration and early-stage planning but do not currently replace the confidence and trust travelers seek when confirming reservations through Expedia. The complexities involved in travel, including accurate content, pricing, and customer service, make it challenging for AI agents to assume full control over booking functions.

Gorin acknowledged the rise of personal AI assistants, such as Meta’s Muse and OpenAI’s Dots, that promise convenience across various consumer activities, including travel. Expedia is actively collaborating with these AI platforms to ensure its offerings appear in search results and to understand their data integration processes. Despite potential competition from AI-developed travel programs, Gorin highlighted that handling service issues and providing reliable support remain critical strengths that Expedia offers and which AI has yet to replicate effectively.

The company's cautious stance coincides with a recent dip in Expedia’s stock, which fell about 12% following the announcement of fourth-quarter guidance below market expectations. Expedia forecasted revenue between $3.69 billion and $3.75 billion for the final quarter of 2026, slightly trailing analysts’ estimates. Gorin attributed this moderation to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and Europe, the timing of the company’s fall sale shifting to the third quarter, and the ongoing impact of the U.S. midterm elections.

Despite the tempered outlook for the fourth quarter, Expedia reported solid third-quarter results, with gross bookings rising 11% and revenue increasing by 12%. Gorin characterized the guidance adjustment not as a sign of weakening demand but as a reflection of broader global uncertainties and seasonal shifts. The company continues to monitor AI developments closely, preparing for how emerging technologies might gradually reshape travelers' engagement with booking platforms in the future.
