Wayfair sales jump 10% as furniture retailer says it’s winning share of sluggish market

Wayfair reported a significant boost in its third-quarter sales, marking its strongest performance since the pandemic began, with total revenue climbing nearly 10% year over year to $3.42 billion. The U.S. market was a key driver of this growth, delivering an 11.4% increase in revenue to about $3 billion. However, the company's international revenue saw a slight decline of 2.3%, totaling $380 million for the quarter. The positive earnings report spurred an 11% rise in Wayfair’s stock price on the day of the announcement.

The furniture and home goods retailer attributed its growth to successfully capturing market share despite a sluggish housing market. CFO Kate Gulliver highlighted that while the overall U.S. consumer market in this space was relatively flat, Wayfair continued to gain momentum. This gain was supported by factors such as enhanced customer loyalty, the launch of new physical stores, expansion in the luxury furniture segment, and a consistent promotional strategy that balanced value and luxury offerings.

Wayfair exceeded Wall Street’s expectations, reporting adjusted earnings per share of 93 cents versus the 79 cents anticipated by analysts. Net income also turned positive at $62 million, or 45 cents per share, reversing a loss from the previous year’s third quarter. The company’s active customer base grew 4.7% to 22.2 million, and the number of orders rose by over 12% to approximately 11 million, demonstrating sustained demand from shoppers across their product categories.

Looking ahead to the holiday season, Wayfair plans to maintain its level of promotional activity consistent with last year, aiming to attract a broad range of consumers through its diverse pricing and product selections. Gulliver expressed confidence in the company’s ability to continue its momentum into the fourth quarter, noting the growth in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization as a key indicator of financial health and operational strength. This solid performance positions Wayfair well as it navigates a challenging retail environment.
