Elon Musk has publicly praised Anthropic’s AI models, specifically Mythos and Fable, while assuring that he would not abruptly cut off the company’s access to SpaceX’s compute infrastructure. This statement came after concerns were raised on X (formerly Twitter) about the potential for Musk to use SpaceX’s dominant position to undermine Anthropic, which is one of SpaceX’s largest cloud customers as of mid-2026. Musk acknowledged he was wrong in the past to doubt Anthropic’s chances, recognizing the company’s leading position in enterprise AI market share.
The foundation for this new relationship was laid in May 2026, when Anthropic signed a significant deal to purchase 300 megawatts of compute capacity—the entire output of the Colossus 1 data center near Memphis owned by Musk’s xAI, which merged with SpaceX earlier that year. This agreement alone is expected to generate about $40 billion in revenue for SpaceX’s xAI unit through May 2029. Google also secured a comparable cloud rental deal with SpaceX, paying $920 million per month through the same time frame.
Musk emphasized that his approach to competitors is not to inflict harm but rather promote fair play, citing Tesla’s past decisions not to sue over patent use in good faith and its open Supercharger network as examples of his business style. Despite Musk’s history of legal disputes, such as his lawsuit against OpenAI earlier in 2026, he positions this partnership with Anthropic as mutually beneficial. Hosting Anthropic’s AI workloads affords SpaceX valuable exposure and technical insights that can help advance its own AI capabilities.
While Musk’s commitment not to “cut off” Anthropic appears genuine, contractual safeguards and the substantial financial incentives involved also act as strong protections for the AI lab’s access. Still, as the three-year agreement ages, market dynamics and competitive factors remain uncertain. For now, the collaboration between SpaceX, xAI, and Anthropic represents a major alliance in the race to lead the AI industry, with significant technological and economic stakes at play.
