Bluesky hit peak usage for the year on election night

Bluesky, the decentralized social network founded by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, experienced its highest level of user activity in 2026 on the night of the U.S. midterm elections. CEO Toni Schneider noted that both posts and likes doubled during this period, signaling a significant boost in engagement as people actively discussed election outcomes. COO Rose Wang further detailed that peak usage occurred between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. PT, coinciding with the release of many election results.

On November 4, Bluesky recorded an impressive 44 million likes, 4.8 million posts, and 2 million new follows, nearing its all-time single-day like record of 45 million set in November 2024. Traffic data revealed a 200% increase over typical levels, reaching data transfer speeds as high as 35.8 GB/s. This surge highlights the platform’s growing influence during political events and moments of heightened public interest.

Bluesky has developed a reputation as a platform favored by users with left-leaning political views. Its most substantial growth phase followed the 2024 presidential election when Donald Trump won, attracting a user base that remained very active during the midterms—particularly during the Democratic party’s successes on election night. This political alignment has helped shape the platform’s user dynamics and engagement trends.

The spike in usage on election night underscores Bluesky’s role as a real-time forum for political discussion and social interaction. As the platform continues to attract new users and re-engage previous ones, its position as a notable player in the social media landscape is becoming clearer—especially during major political events that drive extensive online conversation and interaction.
