Depending on Labor Talks, MLB Set for Earliest Opening Day in 2027

Major League Baseball has announced its 2027 schedule, setting the earliest traditional Opening Day in league history for March 24. The season will kick off with a single game streamed on Netflix, followed by a full slate of 14 games the next day. This advance start reflects a continuation of recent trends to elongate the schedule, allowing players more rest during the six-month regular season and ensuring the World Series can conclude before the end of October.

Despite the released schedule, the 2027 season’s full execution remains uncertain due to ongoing labor disputes between MLB management and the players’ union. The current collective bargaining agreement expires on December 1, and talks have revealed significant disagreements on key issues, including the league’s push for a salary cap—a move they did not pursue in previous negotiations. With such deep divisions and an expected lockout looming, many within the sport anticipate a prolonged work stoppage that could disrupt the upcoming season.

MLB is moving forward with plans for several marquee events in 2027, contingent on labor developments. The All-Star Game will be hosted at Chicago’s Wrigley Field on July 13, marking the ballpark’s fourth time holding the event since 1990. The Home Run Derby will again air on Netflix, following its debut on the platform. The Oakland Athletics will also continue their temporary home games at Las Vegas Ballpark while awaiting the opening of a new stadium on the Las Vegas Strip in 2028.

Other initiatives intended to maintain fan engagement next year include full holiday game schedules and the continuation of MLB’s Rivalry Weekend, featuring head-to-head series among prime interleague and regional rivals after the All-Star break. However, no international games are currently on the schedule because those require joint approval by the league and union, which remains part of broader labor negotiations. The early release of the 2027 schedule contrasts with the delayed unveiling last year, signaling MLB’s hope for stability despite ongoing labor uncertainties.
