David Malukas, the Team Penske IndyCar driver, has been medically cleared to return to racing at the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix held at Nashville Superspeedway. Malukas sustained a serious crash during Saturday morning practice but after medical evaluations and physical tests conducted at the track, including successfully climbing in and out of the car, officials confirmed his fitness to compete. This clearance came after a tense day when veteran driver Conor Daly was ready to take over the No. 12 car but had not officially replaced Malukas.

Team Penske faced a tricky situation due to IndyCar regulations which state that once a driver substitution is official, the original driver cannot re-enter the car for the rest of the weekend. Holding off on making the switch to Daly meant Malukas remained the priority for Penske, who hoped he would be cleared in time to participate. After Malukas passed all the medical and physical hurdles, Daly stepped back, leaving Malukas to resume activities, including the Saturday afternoon final practice session.

Despite Malukas’ return, the No. 12 car could not take part in qualifying due to the backup car not being ready by the 1:50 p.m. starting time. Moreover, the car incurred a significant nine-grid position penalty for an unapproved engine change. Consequently, Malukas will start the race 24th in a field of 25, with fellow competitor Graham Rahal, who also skipped qualifying, occupying the last starting position.

Team Penske President Jonathan Diuguid explained that the initial plan was for Daly to conduct a “shakedown run” of the backup No. 12 Chevrolet as a preparation before final practice, considering the engine penalty already facing the entry. The medical evaluation timeline and penalty logistics complicated matters, but with Malukas cleared to race, the team prioritized his health and return to competition over any temporary driver changes.
