Inside TNT's Strategy To Win NASCAR Fans After Prime

In the summer of 2025, NASCAR entered a new phase of broadcasting by streaming several races exclusively online, a pioneering move led by Amazon Prime Video. Though Amazon's five-race experiment faced challenges, it garnered widespread praise for its fresh approach, emphasizing authentic conversations and passionate analysis over scripted commentary. This set a new benchmark for the sport’s media coverage and posed a significant challenge to TNT Sports, which returned to NASCAR after a decade as part of a multi-year media rights deal sharing mid-season race coverage with Amazon Prime.

Craig Barry, TNT Sports' Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer, acknowledged the high standard set by Amazon but emphasized TNT was focused on enhancing its unique strengths rather than replicating Prime's style. For its second season, TNT revamped its pre- and post-race shows with a dedicated set and brought in notable NASCAR personalities like Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Burton, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Steve Letarte, and Jamie McMurray. Additionally, the hiring of a new race director with deep NASCAR expertise enhanced confidence and comfort among broadcast talent, which Barry believes translates directly to a better viewing experience for fans.

TNT also invested in expanding digital and interactive viewing options, such as in-car cameras, enhanced graphics, and VR, targeting younger audiences and providing a more immersive and versatile viewing experience through the Max platform. One of TNT’s most significant additions was longtime ESPN journalist Marty Smith, whose deep personal relationships with drivers and history covering NASCAR brought authenticity and genuine unscripted dialogue to broadcasts—helping TNT cultivate an atmosphere where viewers feel like they’re part of relaxed and relatable conversations.

Smith described the current NASCAR as vibrant and revitalized, pointing to efforts like returning to historic tracks and focusing on young driving talent as signs of the sport’s renewed passion and energy. For Barry, the improvements made in TNT’s second NASCAR season are just steps on an ongoing journey toward better coverage. He strives for continuous incremental growth in every broadcast and season, aiming to deepen fan engagement by delivering an authentic, immersive, and entertaining NASCAR viewing experience that complements the evolving media landscape.
