United earnings top estimates but airline expects $6 billion in added fuel costs

United Airlines reported second-quarter earnings that surpassed Wall Street expectations, with adjusted earnings per share of $1.99 beating the estimated $1.88 and revenue reaching $17.67 billion, slightly above forecasts. Despite this positive performance, United faces significant challenges due to soaring jet fuel prices. The airline projects that higher fuel costs could increase its expenses by nearly $6 billion this year compared to earlier expectations, reflecting an 84% rise in second-quarter fuel spending to $2.3 billion.

The sharp increases in fuel prices have been driven by ongoing geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and Iran, causing volatility and unpredictability in the energy markets. United's CEO Scott Kirby indicated that the airline is passing on much of the increased cost to customers by raising fares, while also managing other rising expenses such as labor, maintenance, and airport fees. Even with these adjustments, the company expects its adjusted earnings per share to fall between $9 and $11 for the full year, which is at the higher end of its revised forecast from April.

For the third quarter, United projects adjusted earnings per share between $2.50 and $3.50, slightly below analyst expectations of $3.60, primarily due to recent fuel price spikes. The airline plans to cover up to 90% of higher fuel costs in the current quarter and all of the additional expense in the fourth quarter. The company also signaled potential reductions in planned capacity growth, which expanded by just 3.5% in the second quarter, as a way to manage the impact of soaring fuel expenses.

Looking ahead, United continues to see strong customer demand despite the fare increases, with solid revenue growth in premium, corporate, and economy ticket segments, both domestically and internationally. CEO Scott Kirby noted that the robust economy is helping sustain travel despite cost pressures. The airline will hold an earnings call to discuss these results and future plans in more detail, underscoring its commitment to navigating the challenges of volatile fuel markets while maintaining growth and profitability.
