A 600-mile road trip (and data) proves EV charging doesn’t suck anymore

A recent 600-mile road trip to Montreal demonstrated significant advancements in electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging infrastructure across the U.S. The trip, which featured an Audi e-tron with a range of about 220 miles per charge, was carefully planned using A Better Route Planner (ABRP), an app that optimizes charging stops based on numerous factors such as weather and battery condition. The journey largely consisted of quick charging sessions averaging around 20 minutes, paired with rest stops and meals, showcasing a seamless and efficient charging experience, with only a minor hiccup at a Canadian charging station where a payment card reader failed but was quickly resolved via an app.

This vastly improved experience contrasts sharply with a similar trip in 2023, also with an Audi e-tron, which was marred by inconsistent and unreliable charging stations. Issues included broken chargers, faulty app reports, and multiple calls to customer service, which extended the journey's duration and frustration. These challenges were common among early EV adopters and formed the basis of a 2023 “EV fast-charging bill of rights,” which called for specific improvements in charger reliability, availability, and payment systems.

Recent data backs up these anecdotal improvements, revealing that the U.S. has more than doubled its number of DC fast chargers since 2023, with figures rising from approximately 32,000 to over 64,000 units. Tesla's Supercharger network, which opened to non-Tesla vehicles after a lengthy rollout, remains the largest and most reliable, but competitors like Rivian have also expanded their networks. Reported reliability metrics have risen notably, with a jump from 85% to the mid-90% range in successful charging rates and lower downtime, reflecting enhanced maintenance and faster repair cycles across the board.

While gaps in the infrastructure and occasional charger malfunctions persist, the competitive environment and rapid growth in charger deployment have meaningfully improved the EV fast-charging landscape. Travelers experience fewer delays and enjoy greater convenience, which should alleviate lingering concerns for prospective EV buyers about long-distance driving. This progress marks a milestone in EV adoption, signaling that public fast charging no longer remains a significant obstacle for road trips and everyday use.
