Vertu, a UK-based luxury phone maker, has introduced the Alphafold, a foldable smartphone priced starting at $6,880, aimed at affluent executives. Unlike mainstream devices focused on specs, Vertu markets the Alphafold as a status symbol paired with its Hermes Agent, an AI assistant designed to automate executive tasks such as analyzing documents, managing schedules, and planning business trips. The device features premium materials like calfskin leather and titanium, emphasizing luxury, while its AI agent aims to enhance productivity by handling complex workflows autonomously.

The Alphafold’s hardware is largely sourced from a specialist partnership with ZTE/Nubia, sharing many internal components with less expensive foldables such as the $1,100 Nubia Fold. Although the build quality and materials distinguish the Alphafold, its core hardware replicates existing foldable phone designs. Vertu’s primary innovation lies in Hermes Agent, which is built on an open-source AI framework and offers more independent actions than typical assistants, including multi-step task automation and the option to escalate requests to a human concierge for complex needs.

In practical testing, Hermes Agent demonstrated strengths in analyzing local files and managing multi-app automation but also revealed inconsistencies. It struggled with accurate scheduling and sometimes produced incomplete workflows compared to Google’s Gemini AI, which preferred confirming details before execution. Hermes’s specialist agents on legal and investment topics provide helpful summaries but require verification, highlighting the current limitations of AI in handling high-stakes decisions. Vertu supports data security with end-to-end encryption and a dedicated A5 security chip, aiming to reassure executives about privacy and data control.

While the Alphafold delivers a luxurious user experience and advanced AI features, it falls short of justifying its premium price tag when compared to more affordable, mature foldables like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7. The Alphafold lacks conveniences like wireless charging and exhibits AI behaviors that are still evolving through software updates. Vertu is positioning the device as an AI-first executive tool rather than just a smartphone, but current performance and value raise questions about its appeal beyond brand loyalty and luxury status in a competitive market poised for new foldable launches.
