Amid hardware legal battle, OpenAI releases a $230 keyboard for Codex

OpenAI has unveiled a new hardware product called the Codex Micro, a $230 light-up keyboard designed specifically for use with its AI coding assistant, Codex. Developed in collaboration with specialty keyboard maker Work Louder, the device features customizable "Agent Keys," a joystick for workflow control, and a dial to adjust the amount of computational effort or "reasoning" an AI coding agent uses on tasks. This keyboard aims to serve as a command center for managing semi-autonomous coding bots, providing an alternative interface to the traditional phone or desktop apps used with Codex.

While the Codex Micro marks OpenAI’s initial foray into hardware, the company describes it as a limited-edition collaboration and more of a novelty item rather than a mass-market product. Meanwhile, OpenAI is reportedly developing a more sophisticated smart speaker device that integrates with ChatGPT and includes mechanical moving parts. This upcoming product, revealed by Bloomberg, remains in development and is rumored to be designed by former Apple engineers.

The new hardware release comes amid a legal dispute between Apple and OpenAI, with Apple suing OpenAI over allegations of trade secret theft connected to hardware development. Apple claims OpenAI used confidential information to build its hardware, a charge OpenAI denies. This lawsuit places considerable scrutiny on OpenAI’s hardware ambitions, especially as its new device involves former Apple personnel.

OpenAI's entry into hardware signals a potential expansion beyond its AI software dominance, though its initial physical product is positioned more as a premium tool for advanced Codex users than a mainstream consumer offering. The ongoing tension with Apple could complicate OpenAI's plans, especially as it moves into hardware markets traditionally dominated by established tech giants.
