How Egypt’s Sawiris Family Built A Multi-Billion-Dollar Global Dynasty

The Sawiris family stands as Egypt’s wealthiest and one of Africa’s most influential business dynasties, boasting a nearly $17 billion combined net worth according to Forbes Middle East. Their empire originates from Onsi Sawiris, who founded the construction firm Orascom in the 1950s and rebuilt it after nationalization in the 1960s. Today, the family business spans sectors including construction, fertilizer, telecom, and tourism, with operations extending from Egypt to Europe and the United States. The legacy is carried forward by Onsi’s three sons—Nassef, Naguib, and Samih—each leading distinct branches of the family’s vast portfolio.

Nassef Sawiris, Egypt’s richest individual with a net worth of about $9.9 billion, drives the family's fertilizer and construction ventures through OCI and Orascom Construction. He has expanded his reach by investing globally, notably acquiring a nearly 6% stake in Adidas and becoming its chairman in March 2026. Nassef also holds joint ownership of the English Premier League football club Aston Villa and a stake in Madison Square Garden Sports, which owns the NBA’s Knicks. His savvy business moves showcase how the family has blended traditional industries with global sports and finance to build diversified wealth.

Naguib Sawiris, the eldest brother, built his fortune by revolutionizing the telecom industry with Orascom Telecom, which expanded across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia before selling key assets to Russian company VimpelCom in 2011. In addition to telecom, Naguib ventured into gold-mining and media ownership and remains a prominent public figure in Egypt, having founded the Free Egyptians Party during the 2011 uprising. His $5.6 billion net worth reflects a sustained entrepreneurial spirit that complements his brothers’ efforts.

Samih Sawiris took a different path, focusing on tourism and real estate through Orascom Development Holding, which developed Egypt’s El Gouna resort and extended to European properties. Although he stepped down as chairman in 2021, his son has taken over, marking the family's transition to a new generation of leadership. The Sawiris family places a strong emphasis on succession planning, ensuring their diversified empire remains in family hands while expanding globally, positioning them to maintain their dominance in Africa’s business landscape for years to come.
