Apple teams up with Klarna to launch a lease-to-own program for iPhones, iPads, and Macs

Apple is partnering with Klarna to introduce a new lease-to-own program called Apple Upgrade, launching on July 28, 2026. This initiative will enable customers to pay for devices like iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches over extended periods—up to 24 months for iPhones and Apple Watches, and 36 months for Macs and iPads. At the end of the lease, users can choose to keep, return, or upgrade their devices, with some transactions possibly incurring extra fees. This program expands on Apple's existing iPhone Upgrade plan, which will stop accepting new sign-ups to focus on the broader offering.

The move comes as Apple navigates supply chain challenges driven by a widespread shortage of memory chips fueled by AI industry demand, which has contributed to rising hardware prices. Recently, Apple announced price increases for several products, and the Apple Upgrade program appears designed to ease customer access to its devices despite these higher costs. By offering flexible payment options and upgrades, Apple aims to maintain sales momentum during this period of transition and uncertainty.

This leasing program aligns with broader strategic adjustments at Apple, coinciding with the leadership change to new CEO John Ternus and the company’s ongoing litigation against OpenAI over alleged trade secret theft. The multifaceted challenges facing Apple make initiatives like Apple Upgrade valuable for sustaining steady revenue streams and investor confidence while addressing evolving market dynamics and customer affordability.

Overall, Apple’s collaboration with Klarna to roll out Apple Upgrade marks a significant change for the company’s hardware business model. By providing more flexible financial solutions for purchasing its devices, Apple hopes to strengthen customer loyalty and adapt to the current pressures of supply constraints, competitive competition, and legal battles. The program’s success could influence how major tech companies handle pricing and customer financing going forward.
