Peacock Turns Profit 6 Years After Launch—With World Cup Bump

Peacock, NBCUniversal’s streaming service, has finally achieved profitability six years after its inception, a milestone reached in the second quarter of 2026. This financial breakthrough was driven in part by the early phase of Telemundo’s Spanish-language streaming coverage of the FIFA men’s World Cup, which was also available on Peacock. During the same quarter, Peacock reported $1.9 billion in revenue and earnings of $189 million while expanding its subscriber base to 48 million, marking an increase of 2 million from the previous quarter.

Despite this growth, Peacock still trails behind major streaming competitors such as Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, and Paramount+ in terms of subscriber count. Comcast co-CEO Mike Cavanagh expressed pride in the platform’s progress, emphasizing that Peacock’s development is part of a broader strategy aligned with NBC’s programming objectives. He noted that managing Peacock alongside Comcast’s other media assets has been a long-standing goal and that the recent profitability is a positive sign of this integrated approach working.

Peacock serves as a key distribution channel for NBC Sports’ premier content, including major leagues and events like the NFL, MLB, NBA, the Olympics, and the Premier League. Comcast anticipates that Peacock’s financial performance will continue to fluctuate quarterly but expects stronger results linked to the ongoing World Cup coverage in its third-quarter earnings report. The World Cup itself drew record-level viewership across networks like Telemundo and Fox, enhancing Peacock’s visibility and engagement during the tournament.

In a related strategic move, Comcast announced plans to separate its connectivity businesses from NBCUniversal, which owns NBC Sports and Peacock. This shift aims to unlock greater investor value after a prolonged period of stagnant stock performance. Comcast chairman and co-CEO Brian Roberts highlighted positive responses to the restructuring, which is expected to take about a year to complete. Meanwhile, Comcast reported total revenues of $29.94 billion and adjusted earnings of $8.9 billion for the quarter, both surpassing Wall Street expectations despite declines compared to the previous year.
